Eight Storey Office & Commerce Building at Iera street, Athens
The building consists of an eight storey superstructure and two basements. Above ground level office spaces are provided, at the ground level shopping areas are created, while the basement levels are dedicated to car parking areas. The superstructure is constructed with structural steel, while the basements with R/C. The building consists of two independent structures which are separated only at the above ground levels with a seismic expansion joint. The slabs are composite steel – concrete with thickness of 11cm. Both primary and secondary floor beams have composite action realized by shear studs. The earthquake loads are resisted by ‘V’ shape vertical braces with eccentricity in both orthogonal directions. The choice of the eccentrically braced system provides considerable energy absorption capacity through the controlled inelastic deformation of vertical link beams which exhibit considerable ductility.
