Upgrade of the Existing Railway from Thessaloniki to Promahonas – Ergose s.a.
The scope of the contract was to carry out the necessary designs of all technical works (Civil Eng. Works) associated with the “Upgrading of the existing railway line Thessaloniki – Promahonas” and the local parallel and crossing road traffic and more precisely it covers the section between sta. 44+000 and 84+300 of the main railway line Thessaloniki-Alexandroupoli. The existing alignment was passing in part through a mountainous area and its geometry did not allow high speeds and safe travel. The aim of the design was to improve the horizontal and vertical alignment of the existing line in order to achieve higher travelling speeds of 160km/hr and increase the safety of travel. Structural design involved the design of 33 technical works comprised of 16 rail bridges ranging in length between10 and 30m each, 7 road bridges with lengths of 10 to 24m, 7 underpasses with lengths of 10 to 12m and 3 overpasses with lengths from 115 to 123m. The design is based on the latest European Standards for rail and road bridges and the current specifications of ERGOSE including provisions for future electrification of the upgraded railway line.
