Bridges of Venetikos river,

Section 4.1.3s of Egnatia Highway

The valley-bridges of Venetikos River consist of two branches with lengths of 636m (right) and 531m (left). The maximum pier height is 65.5m while the middle spans are 120m each. The bridge is constructed with the balanced cantilever method. The structure is continuous while at the abutments the bridge is simply supported and free to move only at the longitudinal direction. The participation on the design of the bridge includes the detailed final design of the four abutments (superstructure and foundation) as well as to the complete design of the support system of the bridges’ ends. The simulation of the abutments was performed with a three-dimensional model with shell elements for the superstructure and beam elements for the piles. Spring elements were used for the simulation of the soil-structure interaction.
