Strengthening of a Residential Building in Vouliagmeni, Attica

The building was constructed in 1969 and is considered to be a typical example of that period’s architectural approach. The existing structure consists of R/C solid slabs with frames only in the longitudinal direction. Aim of the design was the strengthening of the structure in order to satisfy the safety levels specified by modern aseismic code regulations. Accounting for the architectural restrictions and aiming to substantially increase the building’s stiffness and strength, continuous vertical steel bracing over the building’s height was incorporated at seven positions (three at the longitudinal direction and four at the transverse direction). The energy absorption devices incorporated at the centre of the bracings were specially designed in order to increase the structural system’s hysteretic damping and ductility levels, through the elastoplastic behaviour of those devices. In the case of a strong earthquake only these devices shall be replaced with new ones since plastification is limited only to those devices.
